What is Waxing?
Waxing is a semi-permanent hair removal method that pulls the entire hair shaft out from the root. Because the hair is removed from the follicle rather than cut at the surface, the skin stays smooth for three to six weeks, unlike shaving, which lasts only a few days. At Soma Laser and Skincare Clinic in Nieuw Muckleneuk, Pretoria, our wax of choice is Depileve, a professional-grade wax used across the face and body for men and women.
Consistent waxing also changes how the hair returns. Over time, repeated removal from the root damages the hair follicle, so regrowth becomes finer, sparser and slower. With a regular schedule, most clients find the hair easier to manage session after session.

How It Works
A step-by-step look at what happens before, during and after your waxing treatment at Soma Laser and Skincare Clinic.
Waxing is a semi-permanent hair removal method that removes the entire hair shaft from the root, rather than cutting it at the surface the way shaving does. Because the hair is lifted out of the follicle, skin stays smooth for three to six weeks instead of days. Over time, consistent waxing damages the follicle, so hair grows back finer, sparser and slower. Our wax of choice is Depileve, a professional-grade wax suited to the face and body for men and women.
A waxing appointment is quick and straightforward, and the length depends on the area being treated. Small areas such as the upper lip take a few minutes, while larger areas such as the legs or back take longer.
Because hair is removed from the root, skin stays smooth for three to six weeks between appointments, far longer than shaving. With a regular waxing schedule the follicle is gradually weakened, so regrowth becomes finer, sparser and slower, and the hair becomes easier to manage session after session.
Because the hair is removed from the root, most people stay smooth for three to six weeks, compared with a few days for shaving.
Hair should be between a quarter and three-quarters of an inch, about the size of a grain of rice. Too short and the wax cannot grip it; too long and the treatment is more uncomfortable.
With consistent waxing the follicle is damaged over time, so regrowth tends to become finer, sparser and slower.
Exfoliate gently 24 to 48 hours before, and pause retinoids and retinol for 2 to 5 days. On the day, skip heavy lotions, oils, caffeine and alcohol. Do not wax if you have used isotretinoin in the last 6 months.
Wear loose cotton and avoid heat, sweat, sun and fragrances for a day or two. From day two, exfoliate gently one to two times a week to prevent ingrown hairs. Tea tree or lavender oil helps soothe the skin.
We use Depileve, a professional-grade wax, for face and body waxing.
